Kanya Yoshida, a key figure in Bunraku puppet theater, hails from Okayama Prefecture and started as a Bunraku trainee at 19. A recipient of multiple National Theatre Bunraku Awards, Yoshida is not only a master performer but also an ardent supporter of young talent.

Sanyo-so, nestled in Izu-Nagaoka Hot Springs, is akin to a secluded palace. Each room comes with its own flowing hot spring, and the 3,000-tsubo Japanese garden changes with the seasons. The main building is registered as a Tangible Cultural Property, and the dining area showcases a work by the living national treasure, Sayoko Erisato.

‘Hirakana Seisuiki’ is a classic Bunraku piece first performed in 1739, depicting the world of ‘The Tale of the Heike’ between the Battle of Awazu and the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani.
