In ancient times, the area around Tenkachaya was known as “Tenjin no Mori,” a vast forest. During the Muromachi period, a tea master named Murata Jukō built a tea house here, captivated by the quality of the local spring water.

Subsequently, in the Azuchi-Momoyama period, the powerful warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi often rested and enjoyed the tea ceremony in a tea house here while traveling to Sumiyoshi Taisha or Sakai. This led to the area being named “Tenkachaya.”
